Notes
Make
- "UNIVERSAL" is a brand name used by "Universal Firearms Corporation" which was in business as a manufacturer and distributor from 1958 to 1987.
- "Universal" did business under the following variations in company identity ("Universal Corporation / Universal Firearms Corporation / Universal Sporting Goods /
Universal Enterprising Sales") all of which were located in Hialeah, Florida, USA until the Company was purchased by Iver Johnson Arms of Jacksonville, Arkansas U.S.A.
in 1983.
- "UNIVERSAL" and "HIALEAH, FLA." is usually marked on the receiver/frame.
Model
- this is a commercial variant of the standard U.S. military M1 Carbine.
- "US CARBINE" with "CAL.30 M1" or variation thereof may be marked on the top of the receiver/frame in front of the ejection opening.
- features include: leaf green Teflon finish on the receiver/frame and round barrel; fixed front sight; knob adjustable rear sights; swivel lever safety on the right front of the
trigger guard; push button magazine release in front of the safety; standard or deluxe Monte Carlo walnut pistol grip stock with matching wood handguard; left side
mounted front sling swivel; Universal's patented front barrel band; may feature a convertible gas system.
- overall length with a 457mm (18") barrel is 903.73mm (35.58") and average weight is 2.49kgs (5.5lbs).
Manufacturer
- "UNIVERSAL" and "HIALEAH, FLA." is usually marked on the receiver/frame.
Action
- gas operated.
- Universal patented a method of easily converting all of its carbines and pistols from semi-automatic repeaters into single shot, bolt action repeaters. This conversion
which is a reversible procedure can be performed by the individual owner simply by removing the gas piston plug and turning it 180 degrees before re-installing it. This
effectively cut off the gas system rendering the firearm a single shot. While this feature is interesting it does not change the basic action type which is Semi-Automatic.
Serial Number
- serial number is usually found on the top rear of the receiver/frame or on the side of the receiver/frame at the chamber area.
- the serial number may be obscured by the rear sight.
- serial numbers can some times be used to indicate a manufacturer or distinct model.
- "Pat. 3,382.766" is marked on several different models of Universal M1 Carbine receiver/frames and is not a serial number.
Calibre
- "CAL.30 M1" be marked on the receiver/frame.
Shots
- detachable box magazine.
Remarks
- manufacturer names, codes or serial numbers are the surest method of identifying these firearms. Identifying marks are to be taken from the receiver/frame only.
Wartime production facilities used many parts manufactured by other carbine producers as well as numerous sub-contractors. Carbines were also often "arsenal
refurbished", again making use of components for any number of different sources. Post war manufacturers also used many surplus military parts particularly in the early
productions. As these parts ran out they began to use their own modern manufactured components. It is therefore possible to encounter a commercial carbine that will
have military markings on some components as well as military manufactured firearms repaired or refurbished with modern commercial parts. Further commercial
identification can be done with features such as finish or stock style and material. Specific forms of markings can be used to help identify rough dates of manufacture as
well. The proliferation of modern accessory stocks, fittings, sights, etc. may also confuse the issue of specific model identification.
