FrançaisEducational only. No legal advice.
LegalSteel provides educational information about Canadian firearms law and related public sources. It is not legal advice, we are not a law firm, and we are not associated with the RCMP or any other government organization. Using the Site does not create a solicitor‑client relationship. For advice about your specific situation, consult a licensed lawyer in your province or territory.
Who We Are & How These Terms Work
These Terms of Service (the "Terms") govern your access to and use of LegalSteel (the "Site" and our associated apps, APIs, and services, collectively the "Services"), owned and operated by Steel Software Innovations Ltd. ("Steel Software Innovations Ltd.", "we", "us", or "our"). Steel Software Innovations Ltd. is federally incorporated in Canada and based in Ontario.
By using the Services, you agree to these Terms.
Eligibility & Geography
- You must be the age of majority in your province or territory and, in all cases, at least 18 years old. You confirm this at signup, and we record the date of that confirmation.
- The Services are intended for people located in Canada. If you access the Services from outside Canada, you are responsible for compliance with local laws, and some features may be unavailable.
Beta Access
Certain services may be gated behind an invite-only beta. Access requires a valid beta access code, a paid subscription, or another grant of access from us.
- Beta codes are personal, single-use, and non-transferable. Sharing, selling, or attempting to redeem the same code more than once may result in revocation of access.
- Beta features are a work in progress. In beta features may be added, changed, removed, throttled, or temporarily unavailable without notice.
- Data during beta. While we use reasonable efforts to preserve your data, we may need to reset, migrate, or delete beta data when transitioning to general availability or between major releases. We will give you reasonable advance notice if we plan to delete data tied to your account.
- Revocation. We may end the beta, remove individual users from it, or transition the Services to a paid-only model at any time, subject to the refund and notice provisions below.
Accounts
- You are responsible for all activity under your account and for keeping your credentials secure.
- Provide accurate, current information and keep it updated.
- Accounts are personal to you and may not be shared, transferred, or sold.
- We may suspend or terminate your account for breach of these Terms or unlawful use.
Acceptable Use
You agree not to misuse the Services or help anyone else do so. Prohibited uses include, without limitation:
- Harassing, threatening, or abusing others; violating others' rights or privacy.
- Attempting to gain unauthorized access to the Services or other accounts.
- Using the Services to engage in, plan, or facilitate unlawful activity.
- Representing the Services to others as legal advice or as a substitute for advice from a licensed lawyer.
- Relying on the Services as a sole source for legal compliance decisions without verifying with official sources and qualified counsel.
- Scraping, bulk downloading, or creating derivative databases except as permitted by these Terms or by applicable open‑data licenses.
- Circumventing or interfering with rate limits, access controls, or beta gating.
API & Programmatic Use
We may expose application programming interfaces (APIs) to authenticated users for use within the Services. Unless we have given you separate written permission or made an API publicly documented for third-party use, you may only use our APIs as part of normal use of the Services. We may rate-limit, throttle, audit, or revoke programmatic access at any time to protect the Services or other users.
Content, Sources & Intellectual Property
Unless otherwise noted, the Services (including text, user interface, logos, and compiled data) are owned by Steel Software Innovations Ltd. and licensed to you for personal, non‑commercial use. Some content incorporates or links to government publications and other public materials. Those materials remain the property of their respective rights holders. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of the Government of Canada, Public Safety Canada, or the RCMP / Canadian Firearms Program.
No legal instrument. Public materials we reference or summarize may be administrative in nature and subject to change. The Criminal Code, regulations, and court decisions are the governing legal authorities. Always check the latest official sources before acting.
Paid Services, Subscriptions & Auto‑Renewal
We may offer paid features (for example, notifications of detected updates to relevant public sources). Prices, features, and availability are subject to change with notice. All prices are listed in Canadian dollars (CAD) unless stated otherwise.
- Billing & renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the then‑current price and interval unless cancelled. We will state the renewal terms at checkout and in your account settings. For subscription terms of two months or longer, we will send a renewal reminder in advance.
- Cancelling. You can cancel anytime via Account ▸ Billing (or by emailing admin@legalsteel.ca). Cancellation stops future renewals; access continues until the end of the current paid period.
- Refunds. Fees already paid are non‑refundable except as required by law (including Quebec's Consumer Protection Act) or where we materially fail to provide the core subscribed service, in which case we may issue a pro‑rated credit or refund.
- Quebec consumers. Where Quebec consumer protection laws apply, you have the rights conferred by those laws, including specific rights regarding distance contracts, automatic renewal, and unilateral amendments. Nothing in these Terms limits those rights.
- Taxes. Prices exclude applicable taxes, which will be added at checkout.
Communications
We may send you transactional emails (e.g., receipts, security and service notices, password resets, email verification). With your consent, we may also send you alerts about FRT classification changes for firearms on your watchlist, product updates, and other relevant firearm information. You can manage notification preferences in your account or by using the unsubscribe link in any commercial electronic message.
To improve deliverability and operate the Services, our email provider records delivery telemetry (delivered, opened, clicked, bounced) for messages we send. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Privacy
Your use of the Services is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect personal information in accordance with Canadian privacy laws.
Accuracy, Availability & Disclaimers
- No legal advice. Information is provided on an "as‑is" and "as‑available" basis for general educational purposes only.
- No guarantees. We do not warrant that information is accurate, complete, current, or free from errors, or that the Services will be uninterrupted or secure.
- User responsibility. You are solely responsible for how you use the information, including any decisions regarding firearms possession, storage, transport, transfer, or use.
Third‑Party Links & Services
The Services may link to third‑party websites or APIs. We do not control and are not responsible for those sites or their practices. Use them at your own risk and review their terms and privacy policies.
Feedback
If you submit feedback or suggestions, you grant Steel Software Innovations Ltd. a non‑exclusive, royalty‑free, worldwide, perpetual licence to use and incorporate them without obligation to you.
Modifications
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will post the updated Terms, update the "Last updated" date and version above, and give reasonable advance notice (typically by email or in‑product notice) before the changes take effect. Continued use after the effective date means you accept the revised Terms.
Where required by law (including Quebec's Consumer Protection Act), if a unilateral amendment is materially adverse to you, you may refuse the amendment and terminate your subscription without penalty by contacting us within the period required by law. We will pro‑rate any prepaid fees in those cases.
Termination
We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms, use the Services unlawfully, or if we discontinue the Services. You may stop using the Services at any time. Sections that by their nature should survive (e.g., intellectual property, disclaimers, limitations, governing law) will survive termination.
Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Steel Software Innovations Ltd. and its directors, officers, employees, agents, and affiliates will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, revenues, data, or goodwill, arising out of or related to your use of the Services. Our total liability for any claims relating to the Services is limited to the amounts you paid to us for the Services in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by applicable law.
Indemnity
To the extent permitted by law, you will indemnify and hold harmless Steel Software Innovations Ltd. and its affiliates from any third‑party claims, damages, liabilities, costs, and expenses arising from your misuse of the Services or breach of these Terms.
Language & Quebec
A French version of these Terms is available at /tos_fr. Where you are a Quebec consumer or where applicable law requires it, the French version governs in case of conflict with the English version, unless the english version is explicitly requested.
Governing Law & Venue
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein. You may also have rights under the consumer protection laws of your province or territory of residence. Any disputes will be heard in the courts of Ontario or, if required by applicable consumer protection laws, in the courts of your province or territory of residence. We do not require arbitration where prohibited by consumer protection legislation.
General
- Severability. If any provision is invalid or unenforceable, it will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions remain in full force.
- No waiver. Failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver.
- Assignment. You may not assign these Terms without our prior written consent; we may assign them as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
- Entire agreement. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and any service‑specific terms, are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Services.
- Force majeure. We are not liable for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
